Women processing palm oil at AFE headquarters. Palm oil is pressed from the orange/reddish flesh of the palm fruit. It is different to palm kernel oil which comes from the kernels. Contrary to what was first believed, palm oil is high in beta-carotene and contains anti-oxidants. It is the oxidized version of palm oil (found in the United States) that can be harmful for health reasons NOT fresh palm oil used in cooking in West Africa.

Amazing how deep the indigo is that this looks black! Beautiful, simple contrast between the dark and the white. Patterned periphery with the two halves of the heart as one which is an African symbol of friendship.

The botanical name for the indigo plant is Lonchocarpus Cyanescens.¬†This genus of indigo tree only grows in tropical, humid, rain forests and is indigenous to West Africa. In¬†Nigeria, a natural dye is obtained from the indigo plant. This dye is called “elu”, in Yoruba. It means…. you guessed it…. “indigo”!
